Karnal, the Rice Bowl of India, is emerging as a peaceful and progressive city on the map of India. Karnal’s recorded history traces back to the time of Mahabharata. It was then known as Karanalaya (House of Karna in Sanskrit).

This city was used by the legendary archer Karna as his camp during the war of Mahabharata.

Karnal bloomed silently after Mahabharata until the Battle Of Karnal in which Nader Shah Afshar, Sultan Of Persia fought against Muhammad Shah, the Mughal Emperor of India. Later a British Cantonment was also built in Karnal.

Recenly, Karnal became a part of the National Capital Region (NCR) and in the recent elections Karnal became the CM city of Haryana, with Sh. Manohar Lal Khattar as the new Chief Minister of Haryana.

Karnal now houses 7 major research institutes, namely National Dairy Research Institute, Central Soil Salinity Research institute, National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Directorate of Wheat Research, Indian Agricultural Research Institute (Regional Station), Sugarcane Breeding Institute (Regional Station).

Kalpana Chawla Medical College is being constructed in Karnal. It is named after Kalpana Chawla, who was the first ever Indian Astronaut.
From the battle fields to progressive research, Karnal has seen it all.
